Accounting software alternatives

Find the books you can actually keep current

A feature checklist cannot tell you what happens after a client pays, a bank transaction will not match, or your accountant asks for the source. Compare the whole job before you move.

The decision

Follow one real transaction

For a Canadian service business, the useful test is whether billing, bank activity, and the ledger arrive at an answer you can verify.

Send the invoice
Can you issue it, see what is still owed, and record an online or manual payment without losing the link to Accounts Receivable?
Match the money
Can you trace the payment through fees and bank settlement, and see which transactions still need a decision?
Show the books
Can your accountant inspect the ledger, source documents, tax totals, and unresolved items without reconstructing the story?

Where to look more closely

These are starting points for a fit decision, not scores. Product features and plans change; the linked vendor pages are the sources for the capabilities mentioned here.

Wave

If your books are in Wave, Setttle has a reviewed path for its accounting export. The move still requires checks for opening balances, unpaid invoices and bills, receipts, and bank cutover.

QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks has extensive accounting and reporting features. Setttle does not have a QuickBooks-specific importer. If you move, establish reviewed opening balances and keep the reports and source records needed to verify them.

FreshBooks

FreshBooks supports invoicing, double-entry reports, and bank reconciliation. Compare the day-to-day path from an invoice or bill to a reconciled entry, and how your accountant gets the underlying records.

Xero

Xero supports bank feeds and reconciliation. Compare how each product handles an unmatched transaction, the evidence behind a decision, and the work required to keep every account current.

Ledg

Ledg is built around Canadian bookkeeping and AI connections. Setttle's focus is the full billing-to-books path: invoice, payment, bank match, and a visible account of what still needs review.

Fit

When to stay where you are

If your current system gives you clean, current books and a handoff your accountant accepts, switching has a cost and should earn its place.

You need payroll
Setttle does not run payroll or remit source deductions. Keep a payroll system alongside it, or use a product that covers that work.
You sell physical inventory
Setttle is built for service businesses that invoice clients. Stocked inventory, cost of goods, and point of sale are outside its scope.
You need direct tax filing
Setttle produces ledger-based tax review schedules, but you or your accountant must verify the return and file it with the CRA.
Your books already close cleanly
If every bank account is reconciled and your accountant needs no cleanup, keep the setup that is working until you have a concrete reason to move.

Before you switch

Know what the export does not say

A balanced import can still leave open invoices, bills, documents, or bank activity unresolved. Setttle has a direct Wave accounting export path; for other systems, start with reviewed opening balances and an independent record of what was left behind.

See the Wave switching guide or read how Setttle keeps books current.

Questions worth asking

Is Setttle a replacement for payroll or inventory software?

No. Setttle is for businesses that invoice clients and need billing and bookkeeping together. Payroll, inventory, and point of sale remain outside the product.

Can Setttle import QuickBooks, FreshBooks, Xero, or Ledg directly?

There is no provider-specific importer for those products. You can establish a reviewed opening position from your records; keep the old exports and check every open balance before switching payment workflows.

What makes a comparison worth doing?

Use an invoice, a payment, an unmatched bank transaction, and an accountant request from your own business. Compare the work and evidence each product gives you, then weigh that against the effort of moving.
